Here’s a little bit of information on why I made the switch.
Why leave Substack? - I’ve been uncomfortable using Substack consistently due to the prevalence of far-right publications hosted here, and eligible to make money from their writing. Once Substack pivoted to being a social media network as well as a newsletter host, they had a responsibility to make sure harmful content wasn’t discoverable. I was very disappointed by the response from the team at Substack and their dismissal of these concerns.
To be clear, they’ve taken some action to remove some of the more outright hateful accounts, but many harmful publications remain, and I don’t feel comfortable personally using this platform to host my work. Its a choice I’m making for myself, and I don’t want to try convince anyone else to take this move if they’re happy here. This platform has lots of advantages, and writers have put a lot of work into their presence here.
I’m still going to read and support some of the fantastic publications on here, and you should still support them!
Why Beehiiv? - Beehiiv has lots of the features I need to write my small newsletters, and at my scale, it’s totally free. I know there are some publications on Beehiiv that I would rather weren’t, lots of big tech and Crypto, but I haven’t seen any evidence of the sort of hateful publications I’d like to avoid here.
What’s Next? - I’ve got some really exciting stuff happening in the next few weeks, and after that we’ll talk about the plan moving forward for both the newsletter and the podcast. If you want to learn about it, check out the new site and make sure you’re subscribed, it’s free!
