We're making studying TTRPGs fun on this episode of the game-design podcast Wait, Roll That Again! We're joined by Ashley Warren, director of the Storytelling Collective.
Great to hear about the Storytelling Collective, I'll have to check them out.
One thing that I'd add is to check out sources beyond RPGs for thematic or mechanical similarities. Given your concept, I'd really recommend looking at Costume Quest. See what you can learn, see what some of their pitfalls were (it's far from a perfect game). It can also help you stand out by intentionally taking things in a different direction to existing media.
Hope you do a writeup on the results of your research!

I'll absolutely be checking out Costume Quest - it's discussed in an episode to come! And our Study article will be out tomorrow :)
